Before giving a relative, who is used to point and shoot cameras, a new electronic toy, I gave it a good test drive. I have never liked point and shoot cameras, and I have owned several Nikon and Canon film and DSLR systems throughout the years. I was surprised to discover that the Nikon Coolpix P90 was a great deal better than the much criticized Nikon P80.

This Nikon Coolpix P90 comes with a very great 24x zoom lens. It has (26-624mm) lens, the Optical Image Stabilization which is used in the four way Vibration Reduction system in order to achieve a 6400 ISO capacity. One of the features of the Nikon Coolpix P90 is that is sports a continuous scene mode. This mode takes pictures at 15 frames/sec and 45 frames/sec burst. I was so pleased and elated that the P90 worked so efficiently without the usual sprites related to the older Nikon Coolpix P80 model. It gave a ton of beautiful pictures in auto, sports, and the manual mode that needed no editing at all.

Of course, like any point and shoot camera, the Nikon Coolpix P90 has some indoor limitations. If you must take a picture using auto mode in low light the noisy little gremlins will be noticed due to the high ISO. The results will be dark photos that are out of focus. My recommendation is to shoot in a stationary position, with a programmed auto mode to help minimize the situation. At last, the photographer can apply some variations.

The 3″ tilting LCD screen on the Nikon Coolpix P90 is a very handy feature, especially when shooting in tight quarters or lying down. A protective, anti-glare coating comes standard on the LCD screen. The angled viewing display is handy for taking pictures while horizontal. The only issue is the stability of the extension arm with every day wear and tear. Add to this the Greatest Shot Selector a.k.a. the B.S.S., the DSLR line of the Nikon standard scene mode which includes Blink and Smile Proof, and Red-Eye features.

HD is a lacking feature on the Nikon Coolpix P90 that would have been a valued catch in video mode. Although it does make videos of average quality at twenty four frames per second with a ratio of 16:9, like every new digital camera, it boils down to good batteries and memory card speed. I strongly suggest purchasers buy a SDHC card and sturdy tripod even though it will be more expensive.

People used to using automatic cameras will surely like the Nikon Coolpix P90. Using its mega lens and features, this camera is the best item following a DSLR. If you are looking for convenience, the point and shoot is all you need. I remain impressed with the Nikon Coolpix P90.
